Near the intersection of Elliot Road and Cole Drive, just to the west of Recker Road, at around 3:45 in the afternoon, a vehicle that Caroline Patten was operating was involved in a collision with another vehicle that may have been operated by a driver who was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Both the sheriff’s son, Cooper, and his granddaughter, who was just one year old, were pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

When Brian Torres, age 21, was taken into custody at the scene of the accident, he had not sustained any injuries as a result of the collision. The investigators were still waiting for the results of the BAC lab analysis for Torres at the time of the most recent check.
