All of his close relatives, including his brother Maynard Joyner, his parents Joe and Tennie Joyner, and his sisters-in-law Ruth and Wanda Joyner, went away before he did. He was the only member of his immediate family that had made it through life. At the time of his birth, his parents were Joe Joyner and Tennie Joyner. He is survived by his sons Denver Joyner (and his wife Stella), Steve Joyner (and his wife Starlett), his close friend Carolyn Armstrong, his brother Joe Clifford Joyner, his grandchildren Patricia Gilliam (and her husband Cory), Chris Joyner, Bradley Joyner (and his wife Rachel), Candace Crews (and her husband Michael), and Andrea Joyner; his great grandchildren Ayden Sturgill and Eden Joyner; and the mother of his children Betty Joyner Thomas.

On Saturday, December 17, 2022, commencing at eleven in the morning and continuing through twelve in the afternoon, a memorial ceremony was held at the East Tennessee Cemetery.
