Jerry Bernstrom Obituary, Death – This past weekend, our town was hit by a terrible tragedy, as many of you are already aware. In addition to being a husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone in our community, Jerry Bernstrom was also a very valued contributor to our fire department. He will be much missed. In 1974, Jerry became a member of the Lancaster Fire Department, and just four years later, he was promoted to the position of Fire Chief. He was the chief until 1993 and “retired” in 2007 after serving in that capacity until then. Even after Jerry retired from the fire department and put up his helmet, our department was still able to count on him for assistance whenever we required it.
He would visit our enormous grass fires armed with food, snacks, and drink, and he would check on all of us to make sure we were okay. He kept his gas station open much past the time it was supposed to close in order to ensure that we were able to refuel our trucks and respond appropriately to the next emergency. Jerry has served as a role model for a good number of us here at the department, and he has entertained us with fascinating anecdotes from his firefighting career. He was quick on the draw with his jokes and pranks, and he had a smile on his face all the time. We are forever grateful.
In your prayers, please remember Jerry’s loved ones, including his family and friends. Jerry Bernstrom, a resident of Lancaster, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2022, at the age of 71.
