Joan Hebb Obituary, Death – We are deeply saddened to share the news that our mother, Joan Areta Hebb, who resided in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, passed away at the age of 91. Mom died away without any suffering on December 16, 2022, following a brief hospitalization during which her family was at her side. Our mother was well-known and loved by a great number of people due to her compassion and generosity, her desire to prioritize the requirements of others before her own, and the blueberry muffins she made. According to what the mother wrote in her journal, “The most rewarding part of my life was growing up in a family with love, being a housewife, enjoying friends, and most importantly, being a Mother to three sons.” Mom was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, on June 14, 1931, to parents named Jack and Edna (Miner) Calkin. She went to school in Wolfville. Apple blossoms and the aroma of newly plowed fields were two of her favorite things.
She worked as a legal secretary while she was living in Middleton, which is where her sons grew up, then once her mother and father relocated to Bridgewater, she began working for the federal government as a Program Service Clerk for the next 19 years. Mom had a deep appreciation for the natural world, and she found great satisfaction in oil painting, photography, and spending time at Bachmans Beach. In addition to that, she was a highly brilliant pianist. Mom attended Bridgewater United Church, where she was a member, participated in the choir, was an Elder for a period of time, and, in more recent years, was the pianist for a specialized men’s choir. Both Joan’s first husband William (Bill), whom she was married to for 61 years, and her second husband Hardy Ashley, whom she married when she was 85 years old, passed away before she did. If we didn’t include her Jodi, Lucy, Faith, Sophie, Kiyah, and Bella, the particular animal loves in her life, Mom would be disappointed.
Son Peter (Sandra), Port Joli, Nova Scotia, along with their son Jason and great granddaughters Anniemay, Izabella, and Evelette; son Richard (Deanna), Fredericton, New Brunswick, along with sons Marc (Brenda), Mitchell (and their mother Selma), Alex (Keelyn); and son John (Linda), Barrie, Ontario, along with their son Chad (Angela) and grandsons Joshua, Lincoln, Ty, and The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to a very special angel and caregiver named Joan Campbell for the selfless amount of time that she spent with Mom. In addition, we would want to appreciate the outstanding care and understanding provided by Dr. Heather Robertson, as well as the wonderful attention given to mom by the nursing team on the third floor. Sweeny’s Funeral Home, located at 35 York Street in Bridgewater, will be hosting a visitation on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, from 6 to 8 o’clock in the evening. On Wednesday, December 21, at 1 p.m., the Funeral Service will be conducted at Bridgewater United Church, which is located at 87 Hillcrest Street in Bridgewater. After that will be the reception.
