Joseph Fisher Obituary, Death – Joseph Forrest Fisher, III (Joe), age 60, passed away in the comfort of his own home on November 19, 2022 after a protracted fight with melanoma cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife Maureen (nee Schickling). Joe was the youngest of six children to be born to Margaret, whose maiden name was Velten, and the late Joseph Forrest Fisher II. He was born in Roxborough on October 22nd. His brother Jerry passed away before him, but he is survived by his siblings Dennis (Maryanne), Bob (Donna), Pat Donovan (Ed), and Peg DiGiovanni (Angelo). Additionally, he was a brother-in-law of Jim Schickling (Chris) and Suzanne Russo (Dave). Joe’s 18 nieces and nephews, as well as his 29 great nieces and nephews, who frequently referred to him as FUNCLE Joe, showed him a tremendous deal of affection. In addition, Joe counted a large number of people among his “family.”
Joe received his diploma from Roman Catholic High School in 1981 and his diploma from St. Joseph’s University in 1985 with a degree in Food Marketing. During his time at St. Joseph’s University, Joe met his future wife, Maureen, while studying in the library. They tied the knot in October of 1988, and their subsequent 34 years together were filled with joy, excitement, and several trips across the world with their loved ones. An unforgettable moment for Joe and Maureen was spending their 30th wedding anniversary at the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. His trip to Iceland in February to see the Northern Lights was another one of his life’s most memorable experiences. One final ambition was to travel to Spain and Portugal, which he was finally able to fulfill just a few weeks ago.
Since 1985, Joe worked at Mondelez International (Nabisco), which was formerly known as Nabisco. Joe’s job took him to many different neighborhoods in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and he quickly gained friends wherever he went. Joe cherished hockey and, in particular, the Philadelphia Flyers. Joe and Maureen were Flyers season ticket holders beginning in 1988 and continuing all the way through the 2019-2020 season. He held the position of President of the Flyers Fan Club from 2006 till 2017, during which time he gained numerous friends for life. Joe enjoyed chatting on the phone a lot. Joe enjoyed keeping in touch with his friends and family by calling them every night at ten o’clock from his seat in the garage. This was one of his favorite things to do.
On November 23, 2022, his family and friends will be honored at a celebration of his life to be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, located at the intersection of 3rd and Wolf Streets in South Philadelphia. The viewing will begin at 8:30 in the morning, and then at noon there will be a funeral service in accordance with Christian tradition. Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon will be the location of Joe’s burial, where he will be laid to rest with his family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Joe’s name to the Tara Miller Melanoma Foundation, which can be reached at taramillerfoundation.org or at the following address: P.O. Box 3154, Margate, New Jersey 08402.
